Buck Chimes In On Feticide Law
(UNDATED) - As the original author of Indiana’s feticide law, District 21 State Senator Jim Buck says the issue of viability needs to be re-addressed.
Buck says Indiana had no criminal statute on he books when he wrote the bill in 1997. At that time state with feticide laws were changing their laws to coincide with medical advancements, but Indiana's legislature thought it better to increase the criminal penalty and let viability at 7 months stand.
Buck says now in 2008, medical technology has advance so much that the 7 months rule is somewhat antiquated. He plans to support Indianapolis Senator Jim Merritt in creating a bill to readdress the viability question.
Buck says the age of viability differs from state to state, so the age perimeters will be the big debate in Indiana.
