(CROWN POINT) - A firefighter and police officer from East Chicago have been sentenced to two months’ probation after pleading guilty to misconduct in the city’s 2003 mayoral primary.

A plea bargain reduced a felony charge against firefighter Demetreos Hasapis to a misdemeanor count of unauthorized entry at the polls. Ronald Decastro pleaded guilty to casting a ballot in an unauthorized manner.

The guilty pleas make a total of 45 convictions for vote fraud and related charges in the controversial election. The Indiana Supreme Court threw out longtime Mayor Robert Pastrick's victory and ordered a state-supervised do-over because of widespread irregularities.

Current Mayor George Pabey won the rematch and was reelected last year.

Two defendants in the vote fraud investigation have been acquitted, and charges were dropped against four others. One case is still pending.
