U.S. House To Decide Fate Of Delta Queen
(EVANSVILLE) - The fate of the Grand Old Dame Of The Rivers…The Delta Queen could be decided this week.
The U.S. House of Representatives may vote on an exemption for the Delta Queen from the 1966 "Safety at Sea Act." It's something that has been done every few years for decades to allow the Delta Queen to continue to carry passengers on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.
However, there's been some delays and the owner of Evansville-based Ohio River Cruises, Mary Hukill says that could mean the Delta Queen may not be allowed to use the rivers. Hukill says the exemption provision has been attached to the Coast Guard reauthorization bill this time to get it through Congress. She says the process is done periodically to insure that the wooden vessel is still safe.
If the exemption is not approved, the Delta Queen will have to leave the rivers by November. The boat would then likely be docked permanently and turned into a museum.
