Indiana Likely To Sign Great Lakes Compact

(UNDATED) - Indiana is close to joining an eight-state agreement to protect the Great Lakes water supply.

Indiana will become the third state to ratify the Great Lakes Compact with approval next week by the Indiana House plus Governor Daniels' signature.

Indiana would be the first to simultaneously establish rules for who can haul away how much water from Lake Michigan and the streams flowing into it, including the Saint Joe and Little Calumet rivers.

Michigan City Representative Scott Pelath says the agreement will let the states bordering the lakes monitor and manage who takes water from the watershed.

The deal doesn't take effect until all eight states and congress approve.
