(INDIANAPOLIS) - A bill to yank the licenses of businesses who hire illegal aliens has finally gotten a hearing in the House, but it’ll need two more to advance to a vote.

House leaders have said the bill needs significant changes to make it acceptable. Public Policy Chairman Trent Van Haaften (D-Mount Vernon) says he won't decide till next week whether to attempt those changes.

The Senate has already approved the bill, which would suspend the licenses of businesses caught with illegal's twice within 10 years. A third violation would cost companies their license permanently.

Van Haaften says it should be the attorney general's responsibility to pursue those suspensions in court, not county prosecutors. And he says the bill is meaningless unless it includes money for the attorney general to do it.

Adding costs to the bill would force an additional hearing in the Ways and Means Committee. Van Haaften says he's also uneasy with a provision exempting some part-time workers.

The deadline for bills to clear committee is next Thursday.
