(INDIANAPOLIS) - Mitch Daniels is officially a candidate for reelection as governor.

Former Miss Indiana Susan Guilkey led about 75 green-shirted volunteers in dropping off about 5,000 petition signatures to place Daniels' name on the May ballot. Daniels himself was in Valparaiso, trying to rally support for his property-tax reform package.

Candidates for governor must gather 500 signatures from voters in each of Indiana's nine congressional districts. Democrats Jim Schellinger and Jill Long Thompson and any other hopefuls have until February 12 to turn in their petitions.

I-69 opponent Steve Bonney, who plans to run as an independent, has until June 30.

The Libertarian party has automatic ballot access and is not subject to the petition requirement. The party will choose its nominee at its state convention.
