Senators Combat Forced Annexations

Last updated on Tuesday, January 8, 2008

(STATEHOUSE) - A new bill outlawing forced annexations in Indiana was introduced Monday by Senator Jeff Drozda of Westfield.

The general assembly last dealt with annexation in 1999. Since then, Drozda says some municipalities have aggressively pursued hostile property annexations.

Senator Beverly Gard, the bill's co-sponsor, says the forced annexation problem is state-wide. It's not limited to Hamilton County where most of the high-profile annexations have occurred.

The lawmakers say the bill is designed to level the playing field in favor of the homeowner. The proposed legislation also revises the annexation remonstrance rules and recommends oversight by two state agencies.

Indiana is only one of six states that still permits aggressive property annexations.
