(INDIANAPOLIS) - It’s a felony to get a phony driver’s license, but a phony birth certificate is only a misdemeanor. The House has voted unanimously to change that.

The State Health Department asked legislators to eliminate the discrepancy between license fraud and birth certificate fraud.

Knox Democrat Nancy Dembowski says either one can open the door to a whole walletful of phony documents. The Federal Trade Commission calculates identity theft is a $56.5 billion industry.

The change would mean violators could face up to three years in prison instead of just one. The bill still needs a sponsor in the Senate.
