(STATEHOUSE) - Lawmakers want to set a statewide renewable energy standard.
State Representative Dave Crooks of Washington introduced the bill Tuesday. Senator Crooks says the bill expands Indiana's energy portfolio to embrace renewable energy standards.
Similar legislation failed to pass last year but included coal gasification in the mix. That option was dropped this time.
The senator says he thinks the bill, which encourages wind power and bio-mass fuel from farm waste, is friendly to energy producers.
The bill requires Indiana's investor-owned utilities to provide ten percent of their overall electric energy from renewable sources within ten years. Indiana now relies on coal burning power plants to produce about 95 percent of the electricity in the state.
