(EVANSVILLE ) - Property tax reform hearings have hit the road.

The House Ways and Means Committee traveled to Evansville for the second of three scheduled hearings on Governor Daniels' proposal to raise sales tax to seven-percent while slashing property taxes by one-third.

Vanderburgh County residents expressed skepticism the state can achieve real reform. One resident said, "no matter what you do, probably three-quarters of the state will be mad at you."

Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel and County Council President Marsha Abell joined what's been a less-than-enthusiastic response from local officials around the state who fear new spending caps will cripple their budgets.

Weinzapfel predicts Evansville would have to chop 4.6-million dollars out of its budget, a figure he says would be equivalent to 58 police officers, 61 firefighters, or the entire budget for maintaining city parks and running the Evansville Zoo.
