(INDIANAPOLIS) - The state senate is holding hearings on a bill to consolidate property assessing at the county level, eliminating the office of an elected township assessor.

Cheryl Musgrave, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, says Senate bill 16 essentially agrees with Governor Daniels plan as far as how an assessor would be chosen.

Lawmakers are trying to resolve the issue of having a county council select a certified professional for the job instead of voters making the choice.

More amendments are planned prior to the official start of the legislative session in January.
