(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is sponsoring a bill to stiffen penalties for people involved in smuggling illegal aliens into the U.S. for profit.

Immigrant smuggling is a misdemeanor now. Bayh says those penalties have not been effective.

The bill sponsored by Bayh and South Carolina Republian Lindsey Graham raises the offense to a felony punishable by up to five years in prison for the first offense, 15 years for repeat offenders, and up to 30 years for any smuggling activity connected to terrorism.

Bayh's hoping to speed the bill through by attaching it to a catchall spending bill. Otherwise, it goes to the judiciary committee, which may delay passage until after congress reconvenes next year.
