(INDIANAPOLIS) - With the race for mayor of Indianapolis unexpectedly close, the two major-party candidates are accusing each other of resorting to unfair attacks.

A Marion County Democratic party mailer denounces "negative attacks" on Mayor Bart Peterson.

Without mentioning Republican nominee Greg Ballard, the mailer charges critics are trying to "tear the city apart." Ballard accuses Peterson of hypocrisy, describing the flier and Peterson's TV ads as "mudslinging."

Peterson's TV ads quote The Indianapolis Star's endorsement of the Democratic mayor, which dismiss Ballard as "inexperienced." The spots accuse the former marine lieutenant colonel of planning to raise taxes and cut the budget for 911 services, crime lab funding and child support enforcement. One ad closes with large type reading, "Greg Ballard: Wrong For Indianapolis."

The commercials are the first negative ads Peterson has run in three mayoral campaigns, including a hard-fought battle against Republican Secretary of State Sue Anne Gilroy in 1999.
