Elrod To Challenge Carson For Congressional Seat

Last updated on Friday, November 16, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis state representative will give up that seat after one term to challenge Democratic Congresswoman Julia Carson.

Last year, Jon Elrod defied a state and national anti-republican trend to upset Democratic incumbent Ed Mahern by eight votes. He'll tackle an even tougher target in Carson, who's never won by less than eight percentage points.

Carson has been absent from Capitol Hill the last two months with a leg infection, and is on medical leave for at least another month.

Elrod says he won't make Carson's health an issue, although a news release announcing his candidacy uses the word "active" three times in the first four sentences.

Elrod says he'll campaign for social security and Medicare reform, and a cleanup of a toxic political culture in Washington.

Carson beat car dealer Eric Q. Dickerson by eight percentage points last year, matching her closest margin in six congressional runs. Elrod says he'll try to close the gap with aggressive grassroots campaigning.

Elrod joins parole officer Wayne Harmon in seeking the GOP nomination.
