(VALPARAISO) - A state representative has died before ever casting a vote in the legislature.

House Democrats say Portage representative Jack Clem died this morning.

The former steelworker held the Northwest Indiana House seat for just three months, after a long political career which included terms on the Porter County Council and the Portage City Council. He won a caucus this summer to replace Representative Duane Cheney.

Cheney had tried unsuccessfully to rescind his resignation, but has since moved out of the district and can't reclaim his seat.

House Speaker Patrick Bauer is saluting Clem as a "selfless servant who consistently worked to improve the community." Clem was 73.
