(INDIANAPOLIS) - A state senator wants to abolish township government in Marion County, and three county offices while he’s at it.

Past attempts to trim township government have ended in stalemate, but Republican Senator Jim Merritt contends outrage over property taxes will build support for eliminating layers of government.

He's not advocating doing away with townships statewide. He says that's a question for the full legislature and a blue-ribbon commission headed by former Gov. Joe Kernan and Chief Justice Randall Shepard.

In Marion County, Merritt says the Indianapolis Fire Department could absorb those township departments that haven't already merged, while the county could assume responsibility for poor relief.

Merritt's plan does call for elimination of township assessors, with the state taking over the task of assessing property.

Merritt is calling for a constitutional amendment to replace all county coroners with appointed regional medical examiners.
