(PORTLAND) - Indiana Senator Richard Lugar plans to attend the grand opening of Poet Biorefining’s new Jay County ethanol plant on Friday.

Poet spokesman Nathan Schock says it is a significant day for the company. He says the plant will help move the U.S. toward energy independence.

The facility will become the first poet ethanol plant in Indiana. The plant was built on about 180 acres. It is designed to produce 60 million gallons of ethanol annually, and might be doubled in size within two years.

Schock says the 150 million dollar project employs 40 people.
