(INDIANAPOLIS) - A dispute between state auditors and Fortville’s clerk-treasurer could cost the clerk more than eight-thousand dollars.
The state board of accounts says Fortville has been improperly paying town employees accumulated holiday, vacation and personal-leave pay.
Clerk-Treasurer Margie Manship's husband was a police officer. When he died last year, Manship left him on the payroll for a month of sick leave, and the town council paid him the rest of his accumulated time. The state says both actions were improper.
Manship contends the previous year's accumulated time is locked in regardless, which would cut the overpayment roughly in half. She complains the town has let that time accumulate for years without any objection from the state.
The audit's been sent to the Hancock County prosecutor to sort out who owes what.
