Public Outreach Plan Underway
(UNDATED) - Public hearings, a website, and even a hotline number. All of those are part of the Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform’s public outreach plan.
Commission co-chairs, former Governor Joe Kernan and Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall Shepard have outlined the commission's timetable and future plans.
The commission was put in place by Governor Mitch Daniels to find ways to make local government leaner, following an explosion from Hoosiers over their skyrocketing property tax bills.
The commission is working with IU researchers to come up with recommendations. The commission will hold a series of public hearings around the state to take input. They are expected to have a report for the governor by the end of this year. Shepard says they want to have public input wrapped up by late fall.
The state has more than a thousand different townships, which state officials have said is far too much government.
The hotline number to voice concerns and comments is (317) 261-3025.
