(STATEHOUSE) - A legislative study committee plans a series of hearings on whether property owners fighting annexation need more ammo.

Senator Jeff Drozda's hometown of Westfield has been embroiled in recent annexation fights with Carmel and unincorporated Clay Township. He says a court ruling in Carmel's favor shows a need for legislators to step in.

Drozda says he plans to introduce a bill to let a simple majority of property owners challenge annexation. Current law requires 65-percent.

Drozda's also looking at erecting barriers to involuntary annexation. And he says the committee will also review how annexations affect property taxes.

The panel will meet three or four more times before issuing a report in November.
