Huntingburg Mayor Blames State For Local Tax Spikes
(HUNTINGBURG) - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels says the increased local property tax bills, which in some cases have doubled is simply due to excessive spending at the local level.
Daniels says the property tax pays for local spending. However, Huntingburg Mayor Gail Kemp is not so quick to accept the governor's explanation. He says the state legislature has managed to break the system to where it's all being impacted at the local level.
Kemp is frustrated by the ongoing debate over property tax relief, but he's not supporting the call for a special session. He says he's not really sure that he wants the general assembly working on this issue.
While there is support for shifting more of the tax burden over to an increased sales tax... Kemp questions the fairness of such a shift.
