(UNDATED) - If it’s not the least-noticed public hearing state government hosts, it’s close.

Since 1989, state law has required the Department of Revenue to set aside time once a year to hear public suggestions and complaints on how tax collection could be run better or more efficiently.

Spokeswoman Stephanie McFarland says as late as the mid-'90s, many people seized the opportunity. But with the advent of a website to post information--and email to let angry taxpayers lodge their complaints from home year-round--attendance has plummeted.

This year, one person showed up, with a complaint about his own taxes. That's one more than last year.

McFarland says IDOR gets hundreds of responses to surveys about specific subjects, such as electronic tax filing.

The department also conducts focus groups, with another round coming up this summer.
