Lawmakers Stand With Union On Healthcare

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Standing outside Wishard Hospital in downtown Indianapolis, a pair of state lawmakers and some city officials were joined by a members of the Service Employees International Union to discuss what they say is a health care “crisis.”
New stats from the SEIU show that area hospitals provided nearly two billion dollar in uninsured care from 2002-2005. Service workers say they're getting hit the hardest, with low wages and little or no health insurance.
Democratic State Representative Greg Porter is a member of the health and hospital corporation of Marion County, who oversees Wishard Hospital. Porter says Wishard never turns anyone away, regardless of health insurance or even immigration status.
But, Porter says many of the area's low wage workers can't afford medical care and something has to be done.
This is another part of the regional SEIU campaign to get better wages and health insurance for thousands of workers.
