(WASHINGTON, D-C) - Indiana Senator Evan Bayh today announced a 5.4 million dollar grant to help the Indiana criminal justice system fight the proliferation of methamphetamines in the state.
The funding was awarded to The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. The money will be used to combat meth by preventing usage, intercepting sales, cleaning clandestine labs and treating those addicted to methamphetamines and other drugs.
State police estimate that meth lab seizures in Indiana may exceed 1,700 this year. Indiana is on pace to shatter the record number of meth labs seized last year and ranks in the bottom three states nationally struggling with this problem, according to Meth Free Indiana.
Since 1994, the number of meth lab seizures in Indiana has increased by 3,500%. The financial toll wrought by methamphetamines on Indiana is profound, costing the state over 100 million dollars a year.
