Former Hoosier Lawmaker Dies
(TERRE HAUTE) - Former state legislator Robert Hellmann is died following a year-long battle with cancer.
The Terre Haute Democrat once served as Minority Leader in the Indiana Senate. Hellmann spent the last two years as president of the Vigo County Council. He served in the Indiana House before being elected in 1986 to the State Senate, where he spent ten years. He left the legislature in 1996 surviving an unsuccessful bid for a U.S. House seat but lost to Republican Ed Pease.
State Senator Earline Rogers of Gary says Hellmann's commitment and intellect was unmatched and that the people of Terre Haute sent their finest to the Statehouse. A funeral mass was held at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Terre Haute.
