(STATEHOUSE) - Senate Republicans have laid out a $26.6-billion-dollar spending plan for the next two years, setting the stage for three weeks of negotiations with the democratic house on a final version.
The total spending amount is largely dictated by revenue predictions--the debate will be over how to spend it.
Senate Appropriations Chairman Bob Meeks notes the budget's fate is intertwined with other bills. His budget assumes the state will begin picking up the entire tab for school funding, with nearly half the state's school districts drawing 100-percent of their operating budget from the state.
That plan is part of a property-tax relief plan bill unveiled Tuesday in the Senate, which in turn relies on an expected $875 million dollars in state proceeds from authorizing slot machines at horse-racing tracks.
Both those bills are still awaiting final approval.
