Seat Belt Law Could Return

(STATEHOUSE) - The House has overwhelmingly rejected requiring seat belts in pickups and SUV’s, but the measure could still return before the legislature adjourns a week from Sunday.

The House approved closing the pickup loophole earlier this session. But the Senate deleted a provision banning police seat-belt roadblocks, and another adding pickups to the local road-funding formula.

House Author Peggy Welch found out just how many votes depended on those clauses when the chamber shot down the slimmed-down version 65-34. Welch says there's no way the funding change will pass the Senate, but she hopes to reach a compromise to limit roadblocks.
