Rokita's Apology Accepted

Last updated on Thursday, April 19, 2007

(UNDATED) - The 13 minorities in the general assembly say they’ve accepted Todd Rokita’s apology, after meeting with the Secretary of State to discuss his use of a slavery metaphor at a Republican dinner.

Rokita sat down with the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus six days after a Washington, Indiana, event at which he noted blacks' monolithic support of Democrats, and asked, quote, "who's the master and who's the slave here?"

Rokita says he was trying to make the case for Republicans to reclaim the mantle of Abraham Lincoln, while arguing that African Americans who do support the GOP are often ostracized.

Representative Vernon Smith, the Caucus chairman, says it's time to let the matter drop.

Rokita issued a two-sentence written statement thanking the Caucus, and saying he'd take their conversation to heart.
