(STATEHOUSE) - Senate Republicans say House Democrats should put aside what they call the “demonization” of privatization and give serious thought to Governor Daniels’ proposal to lease the Hoosier Lottery.
The Senate included the anticipated money from a lottery lease--$60-million dollars a year for ten years--in its version of the budget. But the deal has never gotten a hearing in the House, and Speaker Patrick Bauer is adamant it won't--he calls the plan "defunct."
Bauer says he's opposed in principle to letting a private company turn a profit on something the state could do itself.
The Senate has proposed using the money from a lease to fund new programs to lure biotech researchers to state universities, and award scholarships to Hoosier students to keep them in state.
