(STATEHOUSE) - A Senate committee has endorsed increasing the minimum wage, but only if Congress acts first.
If the full Senate and House approve, Indiana would become one of five states which automatically raise their minimum wage when the federal government does.
Indianapolis Representative John Day explains the federal minimum applies only to two broad categories: companies engaged in interstate commerce, and companies with at least a half-million dollars in total sales.
Thirty-one states have minimum wages higher than the federal minimum. Indiana is one of 12 states which match it, while seven states have no minimum wage or a minimum below $5.15 an hour.
