Increased Cigarette Tax Passes

Last updated on Monday, April 30, 2007

(UNDATED) - Legislators have approved Governor Daniels’ health-insurance package and a 44-cents-a-pack cigarette-tax hike to pay for it.

The plan will bring insurance to an estimated 200,000 Hoosiers who don't have it, by giving employers a tax credit for offering insurance, and creating medical savings accounts to pay for basic preventive care.

The plan sailed through the House 70-29, just two months after the Chamber overwhelmingly rejected a smaller tax hike. The Senate approved the measure 37-13. Opponents complain the tax hike singles out smokers. Indianapolis Senator Patricia Miller responds there's an easy way to avoid paying the tax: quit smoking!
