HPV Virus Bill Approved By Senate
(STATEHOUSE) - The Indiana Senate has approved a bill to give parents information about the link between human papillomavirus and cervical cancer and the availability of an HPV vaccine. The proposal now goes to the governor for consideration.
The HPV vaccine has become a controversial issue in several states that considered requiring sixth-grade girls to be vaccinated. Some opponents say requiring the vaccine promotes promiscuity and erodes parents' rights.
Indiana's plan would simply send home information about the HPV vaccine and would not require girls to become vaccinated.
A government advisory panel has recommended that all girls get the shots at age 11 and 12, before they are likely to be sexually active.
