(STATEHOUSE) - Indiana’s “Blue Law” may be trumped by fans doing the blue.
Indiana doesn't allow stores to sell alcohol on Sundays. But Indianapolis wants to host the biggest secular Sunday of the year: the Super Bowl.
The House has voted to let the governor suspend the blue law for a day if the city lands the 2011 Super Bowl. Mount Vernon Representative Trent Van Haaften says it's part of what the NFL requires from a host city.
The Senate budget includes another NFL prerequisite: a tax exemption for all its Super Bowl-related expenses. Van Haaften says it's possible to demand too much special treatment, but says he doesn't see the league crossing that line.
