(UNDATED) - Indiana Senator Evan Bayh lost his mother to breast cancer in 1979. Nearly three decades after Marvella Bayh’s death, her son says there’s not enough money to fund many breast cancer research proposals.

At a reception Wednesday, Bayh awarded Stephanie Tieken and Elizabeth Gough with Marvella Bayh Memorial Scholarships, but he also announced that when he returns to Washington, he will do more to fight the disease that killed his mother. Bayh plans to introduce legislation to triple the funding for breast cancer research.

His proposed legislation will also remove Medicare co-pays from colorectal and breast cancer screenings, and it would allow a year, not six-months, for new beneficiaries to be reimbursed for the screenings.

Bayh has an overall goal to eliminate cancer deaths by 2015.
