(STATEHOUSE) - State Representative Jeff Espich is calling for a school construction income tax which would be based on the school district in which people live.

Espich's plan would also put issues of school construction up to the voters a district where the school would be built. Espich says the move could help lower property taxes because the money generated by a local option income tax would make property tax dollars go further.

House Speaker Pat Bauer says he welcomes Espich's plan to alleviate the property tax burden, as well as one forwarded by Senator Luke Kenley. Bauer says Espich's plan is a compromise of sorts and could be incorporated into some democratic plans to slash the property taxes.
