Bill To Protect Violent Crime Victims Passed
(STATEHOUSE) - The Indiana Senate Judiciary Committee has unanimously passed a bill that would protect victims of violent crime from being unfairly denied housing or being penalized by landlords.
The legislation would apply to victims who receive a protection order or an order of criminal no contact in cases of domestic violence, family violence or sex crimes.
Rights granted by the bill would include the ability to terminate a lease and the ability to have locks changed without a landlord's permission. Landlords would be prevented from terminating or refusing to renew a lease.
