Highway Looking To Be Renamed For Fallen Officers
(STATEHOUSE) - A stretch of western Indiana highway where two police officers died during a charity bike ride may be renamed for the officers.
A senate committee will start the process next week of renaming part of state road 63 between Perrysville and I-74 in honor of State Police Lieutenant Gary Dudley and former Lake County Chief of Police Gary Martin.
Last august, Dudley and Martin were on a bike-a-thon to raise money for families of fallen officers when a truck plowed into their caravan. State Police Sergeant Dave Bursten was Dudley's best friend-- he says Dudley's widow is "touched and surprised" at the tribute.
Officially, the senate resolution only urges the Department of Transportation to rename the road, but INDOT says it's always honored the legislature's wishes on highway names.
Both the Senate and House must approve the renaming resolution. Governor Daniels' signature is not required.
