Cigratte Tax Steals Focus From Health Care Plan

(STATEHOUSE) - A hearing on a bill to establish an insurance program for uninsured Hoosiers Wednesday at times focused more on a cigarette tax increase than the health care plan.
House Minority Leader Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, says there is Republican support to increase cigarette taxes by 30 to 40 cents per pack, if the revenue is used to support a "market-based" insurance plan.
However, House Democrats say the tax cannot be added to a bill that originated in the Senate. House Health Care Committee Chairman Charlie Brown says Senate Bill 503, the plan to provide health care to thousands of Hoosiers living without insurance, is getting caught up in politics.
