Bayh To Introduce Antisubsidy Bill

Last updated on Friday, March 2, 2007

(WASHINGTON D.C. ) - Indiana Senator Evan Bayh plans to introduce a bill he believes would allow the United States to fully enforce antisubsidy laws.

The Democrat also says the "stopping overseas subsidies act" would also increase the ability of American companies to fight unfair trade from overseas. Bayh's proposal would allow the U.S. Commerce Department to determine whether a subsidy exists even when the country in question is a nonmarket economy.

Bayh says illegal subsidies often take the form of free rent and utilities to allow foreign companies to price their goods at artificially low levels.

Bayh views the bill as a solution to a federal court decision from 1986 that exempts nonmarket countries like China and Vietnam.
