(STATEHOUSE) - Governor Daniels says he still hopes for property tax reforms this session that would let local governments raise money from other sources instead.
But House Speaker Patrick Bauer says he's skeptical of Daniels' commitment. Daniels says a proposal which fell short of passage in the House had some good elements, but that the bottom line would have been "a whopping big net tax increase."
Bauer complains Daniels is throwing rocks instead of helping. All House Republicans voted against the House proposal to allow higher local income taxes. Coupled with two Democratic no votes, that was enough to stall the bill.
House Democrats' proposed budget does cut property taxes an estimated $350-million by freezing the state welfare levy and lifting the cap on state property-tax credits for homeowners. Daniels says that budget is millions of dollars out of balance.
