(STATEHOUSE) - The Indiana Senate approved amendments Monday to the Lottery Privatization bill.
Senate Bill 577 would limit how much a private operator could make and give the state oversight of lottery advertising. Senator Luke Kenley, R-Noblesville, says perhaps it gives some comfort to people who are afraid it might get out of control.
The bill states that to run the lottery a private company would have to pay the state at least $1-billion and then $200-million a year for 30 years. The money would be used for life-sciences research and to fund scholarships.
Also, if enough money is raised, Hoosiers communities would benefit to pay for police and fire pensions. The bill goes to the House for consideration.
