House "Snuffs" Out Cigarette Tax Bill
(STATEHOUSE) - The House has snuffed out Hovernor Daniels’ plea to hike cigarette taxes.
The Chamber voted 52-44 to kill the plan to pay for expanded health coverage by raising cigarette taxes a quarter a pack.
Representative Charlie Brown, who sponsored the cigarette tax, warned the bill would need 25 republican votes. Brown turned out to be almost exactly right. 19 republicans voted yes, while democrats split down the middle.
Brown says he's through pushing for the tax hike. "it's the Governor's bill," Brown said.
