Prayer At Issue Again In The Statehouse

Last updated on Tuesday, January 9, 2007

(STATEHOUSE) - With the Indiana House back, so is its opening prayer.

Last year, the House switched to an informal prayer huddled in the back of the chamber, following a court order barring specifically Christian prayer.

New Speaker Patrick Bauer made it an official order of business again, with a 62-word nonsectarian prayer he wrote and delivered himself.

If a Chicago Appeals Court overturns the restrictions, Bauer says the House will return to inviting guests from various religions to lead the prayer. If the ruling is upheld, he says he'll consult Attorney General Steve Carter on whether it's worth the cost of going to the Supreme Court.
