(UNDATED) - A new law will give state tax collectors another weapon to use against businesses who don’t pay their sales tax.

Indiana's department of revenue estimates it's been shortchanged $150-to-200-million in sales taxes.

Spokeswoman Stephanie McFarland predicts the state can recover about $60-million of that through a new law which makes businesses renew their merchant's license every two years. Under the old law, a merchant's certificate was good forever.

Those in good standing with the taxman will have their licenses renewed automatically. McFarland says some businesses listed as delinquent may have gone out of business or never opened, but says the two-year review will help weed those out.
