House Education Committee Votes For Free Textbooks

Last updated on Thursday, January 18, 2007

(STATEHOUSE) - The first major education bill to move forward in the legislature isn’t full-day kindergarten, it’s free textbooks.

The House Education Committee voted 7-5 to spend $95-million a year to do away with textbook rental fees and have the state buy the books.

State Board of Education Administrator Jeff Zaring says the department supports the concept, but believes the cost estimate is $25-million too low. He worries schools will end up leaving some students without books, or keeping damaged textbooks in use because there's no money to replace them.
