(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Both of Indiana’s senators have signed off on a letter urging the nation’s leaders to explore hybrid vehicle technology.

The letter was sent with bipartisan support to Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, telling him to help fund the development of so-called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEV's.

The senators want to reduce gasoline consumption by selling more cars which run at least partially on electric batteries. The letter asks for as much as $90-million in the 2008 budget to develop new PHEV technology.
