Eight Hoosier National Guard Armories To Be Close

Last updated on Monday, December 11, 2006

(STATEWIDE) - The Indiana National Guard plans to close eight of its armories in an effort to save the state some money.

Major General R. Martin Umbarger says closing the armories will save the state $50,000 to $100,000 per armory.

The only large city to lose its armory is Terre Haute. The others are in smaller towns such as Michigan City and Attica. Their armory personnel will be transferred to neighboring armories. The closings will take place over the next year and a half.

Locally, Spencer is slated to be closed, Bedford is not listed. Umbarger was in Bedford last week speaking to Kiwanis club members.
