(STATEHOUSE) - The new General Assembly convenes today, with the Republican Senate and the freshly elected Democratic majority in the House promising to make nice with each other.
At an Indiana Chamber preview luncheon, Democrats and Republicans declared they share the same goal of growing Indiana, they just differ on how.
House Republicans, now in the minority, have misgivings about Governor Daniels' call for full-day kindergarten. But Senate President Pro Tem David Long expects the Senate to support it and Indianapolis Representative David Orentlicher says Democrats may want to go farther and faster. He says Florida's commitment to state-supported preschool deserves a look.
Orentlicher applauds Daniels' emphasis on preventive care in his new health plan, but says he'll be proposing an insurance plan modeled on the Department of Veterans Affairs.
