Indiana General Assembly Set To Begin In January

Last updated on Thursday, November 23, 2006

(STATEHOUSE) - The newly elected General Assembly has convened for its largely-ceremonial first day of business.

There are 15 new Representatives and four new Senators. There will be a fifth by the time the Senate meets again January 8th.

Indianapolis Democrat Billie Breaux is resigning to become Marion County Auditor. The House and Senate formally elected their new leaders. Fort Wayne Republican David Long becomes Senate President Pro Tem after the record 26 years in that job by Robert Garton, who lost in the GOP primary.

In the House, the new Democratic Majority returns South Bend's Patrick Bauer to the Speakership after a two-year break. Bauer promises bipartisanship, but says there will be "interesting" hearings on Governor Daniels' privatization ideas.
