Daniels Chooses Private Company To Handle Welfare

(STATEHOUSE) - Governor Mitch Daniels has picked a private group to take care of welfare and other state benefits.
However, the nine-company coalition, led by IBM, won't make the final decisions. Even though it will cost the state a billion dollars over ten years, Governor Daniels says it's important in principle for those to be state decisions.
The companies will computerize and standardize the process of sorting out who meets the income requirements. Daniels says even that change will save $50-million a year over the ten-year contract.
